Concession workers, represented by UNITE HERE Local 26, are rallying for better wages and protections against automation. Their call to action comes on the heels of a previous strike that showcased their determination but yielded insufficient results in negotiations with Aramark, the food service provider.
Automation Concerns Heighten Tensions
The introduction of automated services in areas like beverage sales has left workers feeling vulnerable. Local 26 member Natalie Greening expressed concerns about overserving and underage drinking incidents linked to increased automation: "With fewer workers to monitor these machines, we’re seeing a rise in problems we used to prevent." As machines start to take over, workers are rightly worried about their job security and the industry’s future.
It's Not Just About Wages
While the protestors currently earn between $18 to $22 an hour, they argue that basic fair wage standards are still not being met. Worker Michael Pesina pointed out the discrepancy between the company’s profits and their wages: "Aramark made $1.4 billion last year. Our cashiers struggle to make ends meet passing around peanuts and soda." The workers feel underappreciated despite their crucial role in the game-day experience, calling on the Red Sox owner John Henry to intervene.
The Path Forward: A Snack Shack Summit?
With the threat of a second strike looming, the pressing question is: what’s next? Union representatives have expressed frustration that Aramark hasn't been responsive during negotiations, and they’re ready to respond with action if necessary. "If our demands aren’t met, we won’t hesitate to strike again," said another union member.
